DVD labels

My wife has a DVD she received that has an adhesive label on it, which as we all know, can prevent the disc from playing back correctly. Is there any way to successfully remove the disc without wrecking it at the same time. I had considered using a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, but that might not work.
Any ideas?
thanks

Why not copy the CD over to the computer and create a new one to be on the safe side? I don\'t know about removing it. I would think you would have a lot of \"sticky stuff\" left over or would ruin the CD.

I have used WD-40 to sucessfully remove a label. It will unsticky the adhesive enough to peel it off, or it should.

I\'ve removed a label from a disc before and it can sometimes also remove the metallic data layers from the disc so I would\'nt recommend it. You could try it but you would be better off to copy it to another disc first just to be safe.

Removing labels from CDs isn\'t advisable, the recording layer is often the surface you stick the label too. Bad design if you ask me.

DVDs are another story, the dye is sandwiched between two layers of plastic. It should be safe to remove the label. It doesn\'t hurt to back it up just to be sure, but really, I had no trouble with WD-40. Spray it on, make sure it\'s saturated and let it sit for a bit. Spray it again and then gent;y peel it off.

I guess I should have mentioned that the DVD doesn\'t play correctly because of the label. My wife got a refund for the price of it and we were able to keep it rather than send it back. I just thought I would try to get the label off and see if the disc would play like it should.

Backup the DVD if you can. Often computer DVD drives are more forgiving of a label than a standalone DVD player. Then like I said, apply WD-40 to the label side of the disk. Get it good and wet and make sure it penetrates through the label. Leave it for a bit and then respray it and attempt to peel it back.

I\'ve pulled off a few labels in one piece using this technique.

Of course now clean off the WD-40 with a mild soap and some water. Just don\'t scratch the data surface of the DVD.
