trouble switching to vlc

im new at this and my computer will not let me use vlc it keeps bringing me to windows media center. anyone know how i can switch it
 
Have you tried changing your file associates for the video/audio file types you want to play in VLC to VLC?
 
i don't know how to change it. i would like any help on how to do this and other possible problems others might of had while using vista
 
I have always dragged and dropped or either opened from the file menu in VLC. You can also right click on the file and select "open in" usually.
