Uploading files to a topic

I tried starting a topic and wanted to upload a file to the topic, but I got an error message telling me that the upload folder is full.  How can I upload a file?
 
I just saw why...
only doc, gif, jpg, mpg, pdf, png, txt, zip are allowed.

Do you have any idea on how to upload a pdf file to a topic? (ideally without having to upload it to a file sharing site like rapidshare)
 
I tried zipping the file, but I still get the same message:
The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator.
The file is either a 108.2 kb zip file or a 120.6 kb pdf file (both fail with the same error message...)

Any idea?
 
I got that message when first uploading my avatar  ???
Just kept on trying and it eventually went through and it was only a tiny file and the right size.
Unless it's a single photo, I use a fileshare site for anything. Not much difference between clicking on the zip file attachment and clicking on a link really.
I'd do what dolbyman suggests. Why worry.
